Barony Skaði Grenache Noir 2017
A vibrant ruby red hue makes for an inviting first impression. Fragrant whiffs of red cherries, cloves and strawberries meets plush red berries on the palate. Smooth layers of deliciousness guide the finish into a perfectly tapered tail. Serve slightly chilled during summer time.
HARVEST
The start of the 2017 ripening season was a bit sluggish. Although drought was a big concern, crop levels were higher than those harvested in 2016. This season will be remembered for cooler nights and warmer, drier days. This in turn led to healthier, smaller berries with great concentration and colour. Grape analysis look very promising and this year will produce wines of exceptional quality.
VINEYARD
The grapes were sourced from a property outside Stellenbosch on the Polkadraai road towards Kuilsrivier. The soil consists of mainly decomposed granite with great water retention properties. Elevation stands at around 100m above sea level and receives an annual rainfall of 600 - 800mm.
WINEMAKING
The grapes were harvested late-February. After the grapes were crushed, a 24-hr cold soaking period followed. Colour and aroma extraction was done applying three pump-overs per day. Fermentation lasted 7 days and the grapes were pressed after alcoholic fermentation was 100% complete. The wine underwent 100% malolactic fermentation in the tank and was moved to a combination of 2nd, 3rd and 4th fill barrels for a maturation period of 12 months.
