New Release Rosendal Sauvignon Blanc 2018

New Release: Rosendal Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Rosendal Sauvignon Blanc 2018

This Sauvignon blanc has a bright and lively appearance. Intense aromatics of granadilla and grapefruit makes for a powerful entry. The wine’s palate is generous and zesty with great minerality, texture and length. A great food wine that will mature well during the next 5 years.
Harvest:
The 2018 harvest season will be remembered as one of the driest in 100 years.  Challenges included water restrictions and a reduction in yields. Some advantages of this season were healthy vines with little or no pests and diseases. Smaller berries meant good colour and flavour intensity and this, along with cooler weather during harvest time relieved some pressure on vines and bode well for quality.
Vineyard:
The grapes are grown in the Darling region of the Western Cape. Soil types vary from decomposed granite to red Oakleaf. These soils have a low clay content and good drainage.  The area is in close proximity to the ocean - about 8 km. In the mornings, cool ocean mist from the west coast cover the hills. This results in a ‘cool climate effect’ that protects the grapes from the onslaught of midday heat which is vital for top quality white wine production.
Winemaking:
The grapes were handpicked, destemmed in the cellar moved to the press where it underwent skin contact for a few hours under a blanket of dry ice to keep oxidation to the minimum..  The berries were gently pressed and the free run juice was collected in a stainless steel tank. After settling, the juice was inoculated with commercial yeasts and allowed to ferment slowly  at low temperatures. An extended lees contact time of approximately 2-3 months followed thereafter and the wine was filtered before bottling.
