We are excited to announce that Rosendal boasts five wines that achieved four stars in the Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2018, confirming our consistent quality of wines produced.
Platter’s by Diners Club is South Africa’s first and leading wine annual. The 2018 edition follows the popular and award-winning Platter’s format, with 941 South African wine producers, merchants and brands being featured, including 48 new ones, along with well over 8,000 locally produced wines (Ref- Wine on a Platter blog, Nov 2017).
The Barony Røsslyng Chardonnay 2016 was our white wine that received four stars. This Chardonnay is light in color with hints of straw yellow and green brilliance. The nose welcome apricot blossom and lemon drops with a lightly wooded finish; the palate contains soft tropical fruit notes with a creamy finish. Our Barony Røsslyng Chardonnay 2017 was officially released last month and has also seen stunning reviews thus far.
Our Reserve Red Rock, Reserve Hilltop Shiraz and Reserve Black Spice all received four Platter stars once again, and we couldn’t be prouder!
Our Reserve Red Rock is a limited release Bordeaux blend with only 2000 bottles in the vintage. The blend consists of 42% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, 10% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot resulting in a deep crimson red color. The nose is meaty and intense with classic aromas of mocha, blackcurrant, and fragrant plum, while the flavors are robust and complex; showing beautiful depth and concentration.
The Reserve Hilltop Shiraz is a powerful Shiraz has a deep onyx purple coloring. The nose is robust and commands attention with ripe blackberries, weathered leather, sweet vanilla and white pepper contributing to the bouquet. The palate is broad and juicy with mouthfuls of dark plums, coffee and supple liquorice tones adding to the complexity. The tannins are firm but accessible and will age beautifully for up to 10 years after vintage.
The Reserve Black Spice boasts a juicy blend of Shiraz and Grenache and is sure to seduce the senses with its ruby-purple sheen and whiffs of blackberries and spicy cloves. The palate is generous and inviting with mouthfuls of ripe plums, dark chocolate and loose-knit velvety tannins. The finish is plush and voluminous; ensuring great length and enjoyment.
The 5th Rosendal wine that received four stars in the Platter’s South African Wine Guide 2018 was the Reserve Vexator, which also received Veritas and IWSC awards earlier this year. This red blend consists of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and offers rich black berry fruit flavors and cassis with underlying notes of tobacco and lots of dusty cocoa. The taste is complex but smooth and soft textured. The finish is long and beautifully balanced.
