We are excited to release our new Barony Røsslyng Chardonnay 2017!
This 100% Chardonnay is golden pale in color and shows a beautiful brilliance when poured into the glass. First impressions on the nose include rich lemon-lime characters with splashes of juicy Golden Delicious apples. A hint of creamy oak and ripe peach flavors paves the way to a generous palate with great fruit purity but also ample texture. Enjoy it with food such as grilled chicken summer salads, Pub-style battered hake and chips or a creamy salmon pasta dish.
The grapes were sourced from the Swartland area of the Western Cape. The soil consists of mainly weathered shale and sandstone that induces medium vigor and produces wines of high quality. The soils retain water very well during the wet winter months. This ‘reservoir’ is then used by the vine’s roots during the long and hot summer months resulting in concentrated wines with superior quality.
The hand-picked grapes were harvested, destemmed and pressed. The juice was left overnight for a coarse settling and then half was racked to old French oak barrels and left to ferment. The wine spent 10 months on the lees. Regular battonage proceeded 2 months after fermentation. The other half of the blend was made in an unwooded style where the grapes were destemmed, pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks.
